How to Track Your Google Rankings in India: The Complete Setup Guide

A step-by-step walkthrough for setting up proper rank tracking for Indian search results — manual methods and their limits, then a full account-to-first-results setup using a location-aware rank tracker.

"Just Google it and see where you rank" is how most people start tracking their SEO in India, and it's also how most people end up with wrong data. What you see when you search is shaped by your location, your device, and your own search history — none of which match what an actual customer in Chennai or Jaipur sees. Setting this up properly takes maybe twenty minutes. Here's the whole process.

One disclosure up front: we build SerpObserver, so the walkthrough below uses it as the example tool. The setup logic (project, keywords, location, language) is the same regardless of which rank tracker you end up using — treat this as a checklist for evaluating any tool, not just an ad for ours.

Quick answer: Manually searching for your own keyword tells you almost nothing reliable, because Google personalizes results based on your location, device, and search history. Real tracking means: pick a tool with real Indian location targeting, create a project for your domain, add your keywords with the correct city and search language attached, and check results daily rather than one-off. The setup itself takes about twenty minutes.

Why "Just Search It Yourself" Doesn't Work

Three things quietly distort a manual search:

  • Personalization. Google adjusts results based on your search history and account, which is exactly what makes it different from what a new customer sees.
  • Your actual location. If you're in Bengaluru checking a keyword meant for Chennai, you're not testing what you think you're testing.
  • Device. Mobile and desktop results for the same query can genuinely differ, and most manual checks only cover whichever device is in your hand.

Incognito mode fixes some of this (mainly personalization) but not location or device, and it still doesn't scale past a handful of one-off checks.

Step 1: Pick a Tool With Real Location Targeting

Before anything else, confirm the tool can actually check a keyword as if searched from a specific Indian city, not just "India" as a country-level toggle. If you're not sure, this is worth testing directly rather than trusting a features page: add one keyword, set two different cities, and see if the reported positions actually differ. If they're always identical, the location setting isn't doing anything.

Step 2: Create a Project for Your Domain

A project is just your website plus a name — in SerpObserver that's a two-field form: project name and domain (e.g. example.in). Everything else (keywords, competitors, reports) hangs off this project, so it's worth naming it something you'll recognize later if you're running more than one site or client.

Step 3: Add Keywords With the Right City, Device, and Language

This is the step people rush and get wrong. Adding a keyword isn't just typing the phrase — three settings determine whether the data means anything:

  • Target location. Pick the actual city your customer would be searching from, not your own city if they differ.
  • Device. Desktop and mobile are tracked separately since results can differ. If most of your traffic is mobile, don't only track desktop out of habit.
  • Search language. If a meaningful share of your audience searches in Hindi or another regional language, that's a separate tracked keyword, not a setting you bolt onto the English one. We covered this in more depth in our regional-language tracking guide.

Paste your keyword list in (one per line), set these three per batch, and submit. On SerpObserver's free plan you get 10 keywords to start, no card required, which is enough to test this properly before committing to anything paid.

Step 4: Let the First Check Run, Then Read It Correctly

Rankings get checked automatically once a day; most tools also offer an on-demand check for when you need a fresh reading immediately after a change. Two things to watch on your first read:

  • Don't overreact to day one. A single data point isn't a trend. Give it a few days before drawing conclusions about volatility or improvement.
  • Compare like with like. If you're tracking the same keyword across three cities, expect the positions to differ — that's the data working correctly, not a bug. We wrote a full explainer on why city-level positions vary in the first place if this looks strange the first time you see it.

Step 5: Add Competitors Once the Basics Are Running

Once your own keywords are tracked and you trust the data, add a competitor domain or two to the same project. Most tools will then show their position for the same keyword, city, and device alongside yours, which is the fastest way to spot where you're actually losing ground rather than guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to set up rank tracking properly?

About twenty minutes for a first project with a normal-sized keyword list — create the project, paste in keywords, set location/device/language per batch, and you're tracking. The ongoing work is reviewing the data, not the setup itself.

Is Google Search Console enough, or do I need a separate rank tracker?

Search Console shows your average position by country from your own site's actual impression data, which is useful but not the same as a rank tracker's city-level, on-demand SERP checks. They answer different questions and work well together rather than replacing each other.

Do I need to track both desktop and mobile for every keyword?

Only if both matter for that keyword's audience. If your traffic is overwhelmingly mobile, tracking desktop too is mostly a sanity check rather than a priority — don't spend keyword budget evenly by default.

What's a reasonable number of keywords to start with?

Start smaller than you think — 10 to 20 keywords that actually matter to the business, rather than every term you can think of. It's easier to see real signal in a focused list, and most free plans (SerpObserver's included) are sized around exactly this kind of start.

How often should I check results after setup?

Daily automated checks are standard; you personally don't need to look daily unless you're mid-campaign or diagnosing something. Weekly review is enough for most ongoing tracking.

The setup itself is the easy part. The part worth taking seriously is picking the right city, device, and language for each keyword before you add it — get that wrong and the data you collect for the next month won't answer the question you actually needed answered.
